You can cut to fit various foams and filter pads to fit in the ac110 that you can't with marineland..Also I run half a sponge and 2 big mesh bags of ceramic rings and matrix for bio.. Works great.

Who says you can't cut filter pad or foam to fit Marineland. I have been doing it for a decade. Marineland sells refillable basket in which you can insert DIY filter pad. It locks tight on gooves so there is no leakage on the edges. There is no locking mechanism for AC so when the foam is clogged, it shrinks and water leaks around the edges. So you might think it is still working, but it is not mechanically filtering.

JoAnn Fabric sells polyester batting by the yard for less than $4 per yard for a 48" X 36" sheet which I can cut into 72 pads for my Penquin 330 at less than 10 cents per double pads. It's so cheap that it's not worth the pain to clean up gunk up recyclable foam.

Its insanely easy to clean an AC sponge though, take out the media basket, take the sponge off, squeeze n swish in some WC water and your good to go. I've owned both, simplicity and efficiency for sure go to the AC, they don't even provide good bio material w/ the marine lands, all you get is the filter pads VS w/ AC you get the sponge, carbon and a customizeable bag for bio-pellet

I never plan on actually replacing the sponges of my ACs

Before I got my 300, I ran 4 emperors on a 110 and a 135.

Very simple, never broke for over 15 years. Cheap if you forget about the cartridges and just use foam or any biological media.
