Best pH detectors?

I haven't encountered a kit that bad, and hope I never do. As Hawk suggested, the API are good for the average fish keeper, as long as you aren't color blind.

OOOOH! Colorblindness would suck! I have a buddy from back in high school that always thought yellow lights were orange and red lights were purple. I wouldn't want him testing my pH.

You really don't want him testing your nitrites with API kits, as purple isn't bad, but red is terrible...
