Best place for Snakeheads in US?

  • We are currently upgrading MFK. thanks! -neo
^ exactly what I heard, I was about 3 miles south (rough estimate) from the mouth of the Potomac and still caught a little guy. I don't think bowfin occur in the bay so I'm pretty sure it was a northern. Great fighter, I'd love to hook into a 20+ pounder! Any tips on bait or lures for snakeheads (people living where snakeheads are native I'm lookin at you!) ?

Caught mine on a bloodworm, a piece of chopped squid, and a piece of fresh crab (yes on the same one hook) w/ a metal lead and 20 LB braided line. My other goal of that fishing week was catching a shark, which I succeeded then didn't know what to do with a 2 1/2 foot sand tiger... in the dark... alone.. on a kayak hahaha

the problem with the potomac is that its a TON of water to try and find your snakeheads. In south florida, they are fairly abundant and dont have to look far. In a kayak you could potentially catch 100s in a day. You wouldnt have luck like that on the potomac and many of the ones in florida can be well over 5 pounds and fight like 20.

Nice! We'll have to try the canals too. So far the plan is looking like stopping at the Potomac for the night, going to the festival, then probably camp out in a good spot in fla to catch the bullseyes after the festival

Snakeheads in florida are in south florida only anywhere south of broward and you should find a good population. Top water frogs work best along shorelines all over.

There northern reaches heavy gator territory? I know the gators get more dense the further south you go, I fished the everglades back in the day when I was on vacation in like.. 7th grade haha and by airboat. Good time but I'm bringing kayaks this time and I don't wanna run into a gator on a kayak.. too close for comfort.

Even where I was on the Chesapeake last summer sometimes gets gators, rare but it happens so I made sure I was armed n ready for it.. Florida is a different story, I don't want to turn a corner on kayak to a pile of 20 gators sunning haha that happened a couple times when I was out there fishing but airboats an airboat

Oh your yaking didn't see that. The spots down here are usually just inside neighborhoods and around town away from gators. Although you will run into some. I've came across a few on foot though.

Im not too worried about finding em on foot, im pretty good at spying out animals in the brush (also been hunting since i can remember).

Thats good though, i usually just ducttape a knife to a stick and i feel pretty safe with that haha. I know you guys take out gators over a few feet if you see em in residential areas so im not too worried about it anymore haha

Sounds like fishing for bowfin by what ive heard so far
