Or get a giant swarm of neon tetras, buy a light that makes their colors pop, and then tell your guests you have radioactive fish....... that leave their tank at night.

I'd say clown loach or tinfoil barbs, but you won't have the capacity for adults with a 55, at least not for a school.

Yeah, I've had both. They're awesome, but get too big for a 55G unfortunately.

IMO nothing beats a school of neons in terms of color...

I'm gonna say neons or zebra danios. Forget the exodons.

Yeah its kinda hard to find exodons. I went to a few LFS around my area (4 of them) and only 1 of the 4 stores carried them, but not until August for some reason. -_- Bummer.
I looked up some of the other suggestions, like the bosemani rainbows. They look really nice. Neons are pretty, but i've had them so many times and am looking for something new.
Never had silver dollars, but everyones saying that they grow to be 6 inches and are too big for a 55. Maybe the spotted ones?
If i were to find exodons, how many would I be able to keep in a 55?

I would say 20 Exodons in a 55gallon. They Need plenty of swimming space.

Giant danios aren't the most stunning looking fish but they are fast and school in tight groups. You could put quite a few in a 55
