Best setup for some Piranha...?

  • We are currently upgrading MFK. thanks! -neo
um...if remember correctly I think the ceramic ring (aka bio media) should be at the bottom tray, you can have fine polishing pads on the top if you want
personally I would just fill the top tray with some fine polishing pads or additional mechanical filter media then load the rest of the trays with bio media.

sounds good... i appreciate all of this advice!

now how should i set these filters up do you think? under gravel with powerhead on one end, and fluval out hose in the other? or should i just have the fluval set up above the gravel? yea... i'm a newb

I would just set it up by itself. i've used the so call under gravel filter you mentioned it's not that good, personally I wouldn't use one but it's your call.
just have the powerhead suck out the waste from gravel filter and blow them into water towards the filter.

a 54 corner tank has two 27" flat sides while the front panel is curved. the tank is rather awkward for any fish that get over say 6-8". with skittish p's that will get 10" or even bigger it's just not suitable.

aw really? i mean, i could always upgrade in the future... but this corner tank just happens to be perfectly suitable for my condo! should i just stick with 2 or 3 piranhas then? how long does it take for a rbp to get up to that size?

oh, and i'd really like to try the under gravel... but i guess i could just use a marine bio hang over filter (or whatever they're called! hey i'm a newb). i guess i'll see how it works. don't wanna upset my fish but i guess if the under gravel doesn't work out i can just remove it. i keep getting mixed responses about them...

if the 54 corner is only 27" on each side then the fish can't really swim much but in circle, I'd say you can probablly need to update in 1 to 2 years. they grow pretty fast in the first year, around 6-7" if cared properly. or as I suggested get some type of serra, like a small rhom you can probably get few more years out of it in the tank as they grow very slow after 6-7" and with just single fish in the tank there's more space.
the under gravel I've used before is just a tray that separates the gravel and the bottom of the tank with a gap. there should be two openings that allows you to attach power heads/filters to to suck out all the stuff that you don't want. however, not everything gets suck out so you'll still need to vacuum the gravel. it basically uses gravel as substrate to help filter the water. you can try it if you want but if the tray gets clogged, the only way of cleaning it is take it out.
gravel itself will act as bio filter to provid surface that allow good bactieras to grow on and break down all the bio waste greated. as long as you vacuum your gravel weekly there's no need for it, IMO.
if you think the 404 isn't enough you can always get more HOB filters or just get more canister filters :)

i just though i would add sand looks WAY better than gravel

heey i had 2 red bellys, the first point is this one: one piranha needs 90-100 liters.. the tank MUST be longer than higher, cuz they need to swim... but not in a circle.. if u put 2 piranas in 150 liters or less.. one of them surely will die.. are very territorial.. u need a very power filter ;)
