Blue would probably bring out the most vibrant coloration but I had black background and bottom with my old goliath.

Well they are so small right now, if I was you I would just focus on growing them up a bit larger. As they grow you will see the transformation. Hydrocynus are timid characins when small, they stress out SUPER easy. Just keep them from perishing and time, good water, comfortable surroundings, consistent feeding and they will color up perfectly fine. Just be patient, you are already on the right track and your setup is just fine, the contrast of light substrate and dark background is always a winner. Too dark or light and your fish becomes more skittish. Good luck
Thank you the only reason I started this thread is cause I saw a picture of when I first got them and their color was all there there'd in the fins and the black stripes and stuff and now I look at them and they are just silver
