did they lay the eggs on the rock , bottom of tank, or gravel? im definatly going with sand... i like the look better, man i guess i really am a picky person eh>:screwy:

I've got lotsa rocky caves, a mix of large and fine gravel, a clay pot and some plants in my Convict tank and they've spawned 8 times in 6 weeks! And not used the clay pot once! Rocky caves are where they spawn in nature, digging out a little pit in the gravel next to the spawning site. Once the fry hatch, the wrigglers either stay stuck to the rock, or the parents spit them into the pit. Not sure how long they stay as wrigglers - seems to be at least 5 days. I've asked about that on here, but havn't had a reply yet. The fry seem to like hiding out in the gaps in the large gravel aswell.

They laid their eggs underneath the slate rock.

thats awesome, and that exactly why i dont want gravel, i'd rather go bare bottom at this point just because i hate how dirty gravel gets and how easy fry can hide in it... but yea thanks for the pointers, i will defintely set up like 4 rocky caves around ym tank, and a piece of wood in the middle... its goin to be SICKKK:headbang2 :headbang2 :headbang2 :headbang2

Leave them be - the undergravel filter will do them no harm. They seem to survive internal power filters in my tank, so your UG won't bother them at all. Once thay've been wriggling for a few days, get ready with the baby brine shrimp! Good luck.

What do you feed the fry? Also what kind of filtration do you use? a HOB or one of those sponge filters? How many pairs would be good for a 30 gallon?

I havent had mine long enough to feed, but i did buy one of those brine shrimp hatcheries for making my own. Will probably start them tonite or tommorow morning. As far as filter goes I had a undergravel filter but took it out and out in a duetto in tank small submersible filter, but want to get a HOB and just put foam on the inlet so they dont get sucked up..

The fry will thrive best on a combination of live food and powdered flake, something like TetraMin Baby. Live food would be baby brine shrimp to start, then sieved Daphnia once they get a bit bigger (when they start lookin like little fish..)- basically sieve out the big ones and feed the smallest ones to your fry. And your other fish get the leftovers! And only feed VERY small amounts of the flake. The shrimp will at least live in the tank til your fry can eat them all. Remember - they won't eat anything til they have passed the wriggler stage and started free swimming...

A sponge filter is always best in a fry tank, but I've got a Fluval 3 plus in my Con tank and they don't seem to have been "sucked up" so far.

To be honest, if you have a confirmed pair, then just put them in the 30. this will give you plenty of room once the fry start growing. If you hav'nt got a confirmed pair, then I would reckon 3 males and 3 females and they'll pair off themselves. Just make sure you have plenty of rocky caves for them to set up their own spawning territories. Clay pots can be useful, but mine have hardly looked at one because of all the caves in the tank.

I'm in the ridiculous situation of havin 24 Cons, mainly juveniles under 1 1/2", in a 20 something gallon tall, pairing off all over the place with 9 spawnings in the last 6 weeks! Don't worry, I'm selling most of them to lfs as soon as I can! But it's all fun and games until I do!
