Best Silicone for resealing large tanks

  • We are currently upgrading MFK. thanks! -neo
Alright so I got thrown a curveball on this one. Been busy all week and just finally got a chance to start getting the rest of the nasty stuff off the bottom of the tank. It turns out the bottom is comprised of 3 panes of glass side by side with silicone in between sitting on a solid wood base. I have never seen a tank like this before as well as the glass bottom. I thought I was going to be able to just trim off the inside and reseal it but now it has me worrying that I should take the whole tank apart and rebuild it. If i take it apart I have no clue how its being held together with the wood trim going around the top. I think it is siliconed on the top edge of the glass as well as the back pane being shorter then the other three so it just rest on top.

Attached are a couple images. Let me know if you guys have ever seen anything like it cause im trying to come up with a new plan of attack

No worries it's fine, that's actually how they build larger glass tanks. I would just put 3 inch strips of glass over the butt joints and way you go!!

That's great news lol. I was thinking about using glass strips like you said. Just trying to think of the easiest place to get them. I'm gunna strip the whole inside of the tank and silicone it and when I put it down I will add the glass strips over the seams and then silicone around it. Should there be a certain thickness to use? And I'm thinking about removing that back glass ledge for a HOB overflow box or I will put it back on if I decide to make my own Overflow like Joey did with pvc pipe and just go around it

Use half inch or 3/8

Ya try your local shops they might have scraps or can order you the pieces you need. Might be cheaper to buy another half inch think tank and cut your own.
Where are you from jvc66 jvc66
