I have a 10 gal that I am using for a growout tank.
problem is that I cant ever find a good filtration method for a small tank because if i get a bigger filter the flow is way to strong for the baby fish
but with a small filter theres just not enough surface area for bacteria to make a home...

any pointers?

I'd go with sponge filter too. And especially if you are trying to grow out fish - filter smilter...water changes are the key! :)

Hydro 3 sponge filter with an airstone works very well and is very fry safe. Oddly enough the smaller wisper HOB filters with SC2 supercartrages work VERY well on small tanks. No pads to buy once it's set up and one of the few exelent features of the wisper filters is thier flow control to cut down on the current.

I can't find my pictures of the SC2 but this should give you an idea...

I use a Hydro 3 Sponge on my 10gs and 5.5gs, and when fish are large enough, I use an AC70 on my 10g planted tank.

try ultimatesponge.com

I've used a couple of those and I definatly prefur the hydro's...
