what are your experiences with different mech filtration pads? tong tells me pillow cotton works great, but is there anything else you guys would recommend?
As many will tell you the stuff that you get from a fabric store might not be in your best interest, as most are treated to be fire resistant or mold and bacteria treated...not good when you WANT bacteria to grow in it.
I picked up a bunch of 50 micron cloth at an auction, cut it to fit my sump. as the pads get dirty I stack them up.When theyre all dirty I toss them in the washing machine,no soap extra rinse they hold up really well. The blue bonded and other types didnt last for me

You do want your benefiial bacteria growing on your mechanical filtration.
The media for mechanical fitration is cleaned or most often thrown away, so if it was treated to inhibit bacterial growth, this would be good because this way your beneficial bacteria will grow on the bio media where it will not be subjected to cleaning or being disposed of.
I would not use the pillow cotton, your can buy bulk fiber floss or other aquarium filter media for very cheap, and the question of being safe or not isn't a worry.
thanks guys. i guess im going to start my hunt for cheap pot scrubbers, then adding scrubbie sponges on top of that. from what i read, there isn't a big need for ammo carbs right??
I use low loft quilt batting from Wal Mart. It keeps the tank crystal clear and you can wash this in the washing machine if you want. It is safe for washer and dryer, but I just rinse it under the tap. A true water polisher!!
