Best way to catch a big fish

  • We are currently upgrading MFK. thanks! -neo
Lower the water level and use a Ziploc bag with some holes punched in it to drain the water when you go to lift.

The key is to buy the right sized bag (I guess the sandwich ones would work for a guppy:))

They now sell the 24" X 24" storage bags, they are large and stiff enough that they will hold a capture opening while you corrall the fish into it.

Just finished a tank swap and it worked wonders on my fish up to a 20" er.

good luck

yea i would say the easiest way to move big fish is by hand with a towel. I move my 5ft moray with a towel and hand. My big Bumblebee grouper doesnt ever thrash in my hands. He's one of those odd fish that like to be pet and be held in your hands. Nets always cause my bigger fish scale damage. A stirdy hand and a dry towel grips them real good and they cant spine you.

go get 2 large nets from your LFS. remove any large rocks, this will give the fish less to hit and you less to get the nets stuck on. Leave the lights off in the tank for an hour or so before and while trying to net them. This will allow the fish to calm down. Use both nets to slowly box the fish into a corner. scoop and your done. good luck.

i have one of these for my 210g. they are a no tangle net which is good for my RTC X TSN. :D

Buy a big net -- it's always good to have on or two around, anyway.

I use two nets to catch any fish that might thrash or jump out of the net.
Just put the two nets in the tank and get them into one, then bring the other one in till they are in the middle of both nets. Then turn the nets so that you can hold both rims together and the fish can't jump out. Lift and put in acclimating container.
I use two ten inch fine mesh for my smaller fish. And two large rubber nets for my larger fish.
I wouldn't catch him buy hand, if he slips out of your hand and hit's the floor then you got bigger problems.

My rubber net's are very similar to this. They work great. Especially on catfish. Never had a fin caught yet.
