Best way to chop earthworms?

  • We are currently upgrading MFK. thanks! -neo
slap chopping them is not going to be any better in not getting blood and poop than when you cut them with scissors. In fact, its going to make even more of a mess and you will be putting stuff into your tank you dont want (poop and the blood)
Just get a good pair of scissors, cut them over a cup, rinse and feed. That way you are not putting in all that crap you dont want.

that's why you rinse them.... why would I put poo and blood into my tank? My issue is the squirming and fattening up of the worms, it's annoying. Not the mess. Though it does get all over my counter.

I dunno I guess I just get annoyed with all the poop coming out everywhere and them squirming as I try to cut and only get halfway through.

This is why you are supposed to let earthworms sit for 24 hours before feeding. To let them void out the dirt so that you are not feeding it to your fish.

If you cant cut through earthworms with your scissors....plus one to everyone who thinks you need a new pair.

I have never heard of this sitting our for 24 hours thing, I usually squeeze out what I can and wash out the rest.

The reason I have trouble cutting the worms is because they squirm out of the scissors unless I hold them on both sides like I'm cutting a piece of rope, not because my scissors aren't sharp :P I guess it makes sense to cut them this way, but when the pieces are smaller it is still hard to cut them without them sliming out of the blades.

Either way, I have solved the issue :nilly:

Comedy. What happens to poop and blood if the ray is getting whole worms instead of cut worms? Like, er, happens in the wild (and happens once the ray can take whole worms)? And which wild rays are leaving worms out for 24 hours?

If I'm cutting worms, I put 'em on a board in a pile and just slice away. Some big bits, some small bits, blood, guts, slime, poop, dirt. The rays don't care.

No the rays dont care, but since you are putting them in your closed limited water system, its better to cut down on any waist that you can. In the wild, there is more water, more wash ways and natural cleaners that will take care of all that. But in your tank, you should watch how much bio you have in your system to keep your water as clean as you can.

Ive never kept my worms out for 24 hrs. I just take them out of the frig or the worm garden, cut them into three pieces, put in a cup, rinse a few times and feed. Better to have fresh worms...

If you worry about the waste of some poor small nightcrawlers poop throwing your tank away biologicaly, you should seriously upgrade! Worms must be some of the purest i have put in there, biologicaly. 2x on pete up there!

Not worried, but no since adding any more than you have to, esp when you add in 10 to 12 worms in just one tank.
