I will be setting up anew tank soon and just wonder how people do their soild black backgrounds. I would like to stay away from paint as I dont like the idea of painting the back side black incase I change my mind about it down the road. I was thinking a large piece of laminated bristole board or something. But I think the colour would fade over time from the lights.

So how does everyone else do it?

Try goin to a sign making business and gettin a piece of black 3m vinyl that fits the back of the tank.

Petsmart and Petco both sell a solid black background for $1.99/ft. It is 24" tall. I'm not sure how tall the tank is that you want to put it on, but say it is 24" tall and 8ft long, you're looking at a $16 background that won't fade.

Try calling LFS's in your city. Backgrounds aren't hard to find. I picked up 8' x 30" tall background from Big Al's LFS. It has 2 colors, 1 side is solid black and other side is solid blue. Cost $2.00 per ft. I believe Petsmart sells large backgrounds as well.

You could try black fabric from walmart or wherever and tape it to the back

This is what I do.

Black King Size Flat sheets from walmart run less than 5 bucks and it's more than enough fabric to cover a few different tanks. I also buy the velcro squares and use those to attach the sheet to the tank. This way I can take the sheets off and wash them if they get wet or nasty from calcium buildup or whathaveyou. I've had the same sheets going on 4 years and they haven't faded.

However, I think I'm going to make the switch to black paint when I move in a few months. I just think it looks better.

I've also used dark blue/black poster and foam board for a cheap fix. Haven't had any problems with fading after a couple years..
