Well, it's not been a good last 10 days for one of my larger cichlids. I have a large chocolate cichlid that about 14 days ago developed a bump right below on of it's dorsal spines. 2 days later it ruptured and one of the spines was showing. I moved it to a hospital tank and began treatment with melaflex. The wound continued to grow and the flesh is just slothing off. I've treated with anitbioticx, melaflex, you name it and now the fish is just suffering and I don't know how much longer I can stand to see it like that.
The spot is not red or infected so I really don't know that there is anything else that I can do. Now 4 spines are completely showing and the flesh is missing all the way to its backbone. The spot is probably the size of 2 silver dollars and each day is larger. There will even be chuncks of flesh floating on the top of the tank every day. I've treated with everything I know and it does not look infected. My wife is a vet and says it is cancer. We even went as far as giving it a small local injection of penacilian.
None of my other fish have anything wrong with them and the chocolate did not have any scratches or was never picked on by the other fish. I've never seen this before.
Simple fact now is that the fish is suffering and dying. What is the best way to euthanize it.
Really bummed,
J.D.
