Clove oil... freezing is inhumane. And lupin, I don't know about this "grain alcohol" stuff, clove oil is all you need to do the job.

Thanks for your help everyone. I agree that bashing them is probably the fastest but I'm not real sure I can bring myself to do it. I'll pick up some clove oil today. If I can't find any I'll have my neighbor come do the dirty work.
Eugenol, the active "ingredient" in clove oil or whatever you call it, is also used for curing tooth aches. You can look at your local Walgreens to see if they have any tooth ache medicine with eugenol, should you fail to find some anywhere else.
Find someone else who isnt emotionally attached to the fish.........and one quick blow. Fast is best...........I know its sounds horrible, but its instant.

Hi JD... sorry you and your fish have to go thru this... chocolates are really sweet fish.. I would go for the clove oil.. Since your wife is a vet, I would just let her do it and both of you know that you are helping a "friend" out of its misery... Best of luck.. Sue
