Best way to euthanize large cichlids?

  • We are currently upgrading MFK. thanks! -neo
clove oil and bashing are the only 2 options i consider
but sometimes clove oil isnt available so bashing would be the next best thing

jgentry i do respect you're decision but the longer your pet stays in that condition the longer it suffers

the best way to slice onions without crying is to ask someone else to slice it for you

I've only had to use this once, it's a product called Euthenase . . . it's made by a company called Aquarium Products . . . it worked as advertised, very peaceful . . . but good luck finding it anywhere . . . for all I know, it's just a clove oil (?)

I would do the freezer. sorry for your loss. :(

Please don't freeze your fish. It's very possible they will feel the pain of ice crystals forming in their tissues and that cannot feel good.

Never flush living fish in the toilet either.

C02 saturation in water is probably the most humane, but this method isnt available to most people.

do what every fisherman has done for centuries, smack its head against a hard object. i usually put in a walmart bag and slam it on my driveway.

Man you guys are brutal, is clove oil expensive over there or something?? I know a spike through the brain works well (thats what I do when fishing because its obviously not practical to have a bucket and some clove oil!) but for a pet you've raised and cared for clove oil is the only way to go. I could never "smash its head in" with a hammer.

Would you put your dog down like that? :screwy:

I went through this a year ago with a large jag that paralyzed himself hitting the glass. I used clove oil. It worked and the fish didn't seem to suffer at all. After he was asleep, I put him in the freezer just to be sure. GNC was the only place I could find clove oil and I tried every drug store and WalMart in town. Good luck, I know it's hard.
