Bichirs don't need hiding spots. They like to use it for cover or to ambush prey but it is not needed.
I got sick of my endlis hiding under a big piece of driftwood and took mine out. The activity level really picked up.

I'm sorry this is just wrong they need their hiding spots to reduce stress not just for "hunting" the Barebottom and no decor is known as JDM and is not the "only" way to keep Polys

All of those polys are generally shy they'll get use to you eventually and Dithers may just be eatin the endli sounds like its territorial re arranging might help

As I stated with your stock the bichirs don't need to hide in the driftwood.
It is just their nature to do so, taking it out is not going to add more stress to your bichirs.

Speaking of shy bichirs, my fairly new ropefish has not been seen for almost 2 weeks, until today. He hides in a large piece of mopani wood, along with my fire eel.

how about moving your tank where there is more 'traffic'? perhaps where you have to walk past it to get to your kitchen or another room? my tank is right next to my sofa so i'm sat next to them every night.

It's not really an option for me right now bc I don't have a stand. I just put my tank by the fireplace.

I think I'll take your advice and try this. I see a bunch of people in the media lounge without driftwood for their bichir tanks and theirs seem ok. I'm kinda getting frustrated with my bichirs hiding all the time anyway. They even hide with the lights out.

Take out most of your decors and leave only one piece in there. They will be swimming and moving more. Some bichirs can take up two weeks to adjust to a tank. For now, you should feed very little then gradually feed more the next few days.

i have a senegal bichir and thinking of adding 1 more, and it's really, really active. it normally swims up to the surface when i'm about to feed and it will eat on top like any other fish, without using sinking pellets like other bichirs.

my bichir is just newly bought 1 week and it started not to be shy around just 2 or 3 days after i purchased it. try sinking pellets, and see if they swim to the surface to get food like mine, good luck!

Some species are more active than others I've found in MY experience that my ornate swims around nad my Endlicheri just triues to burrow (???) In the end somehow my Endlicheri gets to the food first but i guess its cus it doesnt waste its energy

Probably still settling in,my ornates are more active than my endlis but they tend to lie on top of eachother at the back behind my plants, not out of view just a bit darker but my endlis sit at the front,my take on tanks is that they dont live in barebottoms so they should have at least sand but you dont have to go over the top with wood just put a few darker places in,hth.
