My Question is when did fighting bettas become illegal in Thailand? As far as I am aware both fish, mantis, cricket, and cock fighting are all still legal there. It is the gambling that is legally frowned upon, mainly because it is hard for the government to get thier cut.

I will not debate the morality of these practices but will point out that out of the four listed only in the betta fights do the losers generally survive to fight another day. Traditional Betta fights continue only until submission, not death.

Now, to answer the origional question on training fighting bettas I refer the thread originator to the following site maintained by someone who breeds, raises and fights thier fish. Go to www.siamaquatic.com. There is quite a bit of info available there.

If you must actually fight your fish make sure you get the right strain for it, the show type longfins are totally unsuitable.

$5 for a good plaket is a pretty good price.
now this is what im talking about just a good ole answer to the questions:D

I was at a LFS & observed a man buying dozen's of bettas. I asked him if he was a breeder but he didn't understand English. I asked the fellow bagging them & he said the guy came in every week buying that many & he was fighting them. I went up to 1 of the owners, sitting at the register & she laughed & said she didn't know what the guy did with them after they left the store. I wrote a letter to her husband (the other owner) & he never responded. I called him & again, he laughed & compared this to feeding feeders to oscars, what's the difference? So I looked up the laws & found that every state has their own animal cruelty laws & mine (IL) says it's a state offence & turned them into the Dept of Agriculture. They went in & told them it was just as bad an offence as fighting dogs or cocks. To this day, they have a sign up saying 1 betta per person & every single person has to sign a note of release (I don't tremember what it said). Needles to say, I've boycotted that store ever since.

and you feel good about that?

I would. This is a classic case of somebody backstabbing what they love(d) because they were persuaded by the almighty dollar. It is good that someone put their morals back in order.

lol, sometimes its best to just mind your biz /because whos to say that thats what that guy was really buying those fish for i mean puffer punk even said that the woman at the front even said she didnt know what he did with them when he left there

She was laughing when she said it too. The guy bagging the fish told me that's what the guy buys them for. The husband/owner knew exactly what was going on because he tried to defend it, saying it's no different than feeding feeders to fish, so there is no doubt in my mind that's what those bettas were for. I hate to mention race but the buyer was Asian & I know betta fighting is popular in the Asian community.
