Betta tank

  • We are currently upgrading MFK. thanks! -neo
Islandguy11 so you were running with no filter? How often did you do waterchanges?

The only thing i don't like about bettas is that i can't really put more than 1 in a tank without separation....

How about a female sorority? Did any of you tried?

No, that was my staff (local Thai) who doesn't use filtration and I'm not sure how often he does water changes (knowing locals probably not overly often lol). My tank pictured had a built in corner filter (with output closer to bottom of tank, so flow didn't stress betta). I put in the sponge filter on the other side of the tank just to provide a little bit of surface agitation.

And yes with males that's the frustrating issue, only one per tank (and if you use a divider it ideally shouldn't be clear or opaque, as they can still see each other).

Thanks for all the info. The betta tank will be a December project (and black water experiment). If i had a less busy office/workspace i'd keep it at work.

Closer in time is a patio pond project for guppies and mollies. More on that soon ?

I actually asked one of my lfs if i could mix a few females with a male. The lady there looked at me like i said the dumbest thing ever ?

I'm lucky that most if not all lfs in Mauritius are family owned and actually know fish

My 10 year old daughter has a 10g tank that is currently home to a hermit crab that she has lost all interest in. We're going to rehome the crab and set it up for fish. I was going to plant it heavily and add a snail and a few shrimp and am trying to decide between 1 male Betta or 3 female Bettas. I've read online that 5 or 6 would fit in a 10g but to me it seems like 3 might be too many. I'd be curious to see the tank with 150 female bettas.

Also with this if there is enough line of site blocks 3 might be ok but I'd not do any more. Shrimp may get eaten. Mine tolerates snails only.
Be ready to rehome 2 just in case.

twentyleagues twentyleagues I've recently gotten married and have tried making this hobby a little simpler, not as much free time to put into it, so I try my best to avoid having to rehome after the fact, try to get it setup with the best odds for success to begin with. I'll probably just go with 1 male. Also, I was going to buy a few ghost shrimp and see if they survived before buying cherry shrimp. Thanks for the info.

I was reading about sororities earlier on this afternoon and saw an article saying that a lot of effort is put into preventing fighting and having fish killing each other...
