Better off in a small tank?

  • We are currently upgrading MFK. thanks! -neo
Pictures of the 2 tanks? I am thinking along the lines of copying whatever (specially decor) is in the 29G into the larger tank. The paratilapia feels more secure in the 29G, that should be the case. You can also check for current, internal and ambient noise, lighting differences and water parameters. Also for dithers, I am thinking of those he cannot catch and kill very fast. Establish the dithers first so they know where to hide and are oriented in the tank (hiding spots) when the paratilapia is introduced. How big is the paratilapia anyway? Hope the best for your polleni.

There's no need for pics on a thread like this in my opinion and I really wish people would read OP's description before asking questions that have already been clearly answered it happens all the time and it drives me crazy when I read threw treads lol but to answer the op's question I find some fish get use to small tanks their whole life and thats what they get use to and they prefer a tiny tank I bought 2 midevils that where both 11 to 12 inch and the guy that brought them in according to store owner had them in a 30 gallon and when they where in the store they were only in a 55 gallon so me feeling bad I bought both and put them in my 180 well the larger of the 2 took to it great but the smaller one just sat in the corner jammed under my filter intake didn't really eat or move after a month I couldn't take it anymore so I add some smaller fish figuring were he is so big it may get him to move and show dominance so I put a 6 inch male JD acouple 10 inch Oscar and a 7 inch green terror needless to say my green terror beat the midevil up so I put him in a 40 breeder to heal up and so I could treat him and with in a week in that tank he was swimming eating crazy like a pig his colors got more vibrant he became very owner responsive which he never was once with me in the big tank so I left him there by himself and never thought twice .....so as long as your fish can turn in the tank with out hitting and is about 3 time the length of the fish you should be fine as long as he is solo kept... cichlids can deal with this type of thing relatively well and if he's 8 to 9 inches like you said he won't be getting to much bigger just keep good filtration regular water changes with good diet and you should be fine

put it this way...

2 to 3 inches-10 gallon
4 to 5 inches-20 gallon or 29 gallon
6 to 8 inches-40B or 50B
5 to 6 inches-55 gallon
anything over 8 inches deserves a 75 gallon or more..

Thank you, as you descride posting threads is more of a headache then anything. Just have to repeat myself a dozen times and try to weed through the BS.

Are you suggesting that he would not act this way in a larger then 55g tank? If so maybe you missed that he was in a 450g tank.

Its hard to say what is best to do in this case. I think the idea of copying the decor over to the other tank (55) might be worth a try? I almost wonder if a 40b would be worth a shot b/c they are big but they still have that small feel, but then that might require you getting a new tank. If its a I am not eating/not doing well type of deal then I would lean towards keeping him where he seems to be at his best and make the best home out of it for him as possible.

The 29g was pretty much a bare tank with gravel. The 55g was the same, and he just sat in the corner and sulked. Once I added driftwood he sits next to the driftwood and sulks. When in the 29g this guy is a real "glassbanger" and a very aggressive eater. Now when a get my face or finger near the tank, no glass banging, doesn't even move just sits.

Think I'll be moving him back to the 29g tomorrow. The 40b is a good idea, I have one sitting dry maybe I'll go that route.

There's no helping this guy and that other guy if he thinks all our posts are BS. I'm off to leave this site.

I used to own a polleni, and i found unless he had at least one cave in his tank he wouldnt be happy... Mine used to like hiding, but if some one got near the tank he would come out and rush the glass...

So maybe add some deco to the 55G and see what happens, if he has areas to hide, he might start to get more comfortable...

Yeah that's what he is kinda doing with the driftwood in the 55g. Didin't have a cave though in the 29g. But the 29g is on end in a closet next to another 29g so this kinda makes the whole tank like a cave. I'll build him a more cave like structure and see if their is any change in behavior.

See ya, just tired of repeating the same info over and over again. You asked in your last post how big the paratilapia is, yet it was the first bit of information given in my original post :duh:
