Better option: 3 2217s or 2 FX5s

Okay, so the filter prices are not what I once thought it was.

I took a trip to big als and a 2260 is $600, SIX HUNDRED DOLLARS CAD and its not even the 2262 version.

Meanwhile, 2 FX5s are $160 each + $120 Shipping fee for 2, which = $440. A big, big, big difference.

I think my choice is very obvious now, I'll be buying 2 FX5s online. Americans are lucky, I talked to the salesman at BA and they explained that because the american retailers buy them in bulk, you get better prices.

I think I will buy 5 liters of Substrat Pro and 8 liters of Pond Matrix to fill my FX5. I should be able to set up the 2 filters for around $600 which is incredibly expensive in my eyes.

I've thought about how reliable the FX5 is, but I came to the conclusion that if i took good care of it, it should last a while. Priming on the classics is a pain. I found out the hard way with my 2217. While the 2262 is a monster, I'm sure 2 FX5 will not be much worse. I also decided to go against all substrat pro because I'm fairly confident that the bio media in my 2217 + 2 FX5s will keep the nitrites and ammonia in check.

With that said, I completely agree with you all that the 2262 is better and more reliable. But with cash considerations, I'm afraid I'll have to go with the FX5, for future readers, if $$$ isn't an issue, by all means go for the 2262, I have read next to ZERO bad reviews on it.

2260s are $299.99 at www.thatfishplace.com

ok got a question on this thread. wouldnt 1 fx5 do the trick? its a 180 and the fx5 is rated for a 400 gal tank. its pushin at least 1000 gal's and hour. i was thinkin of gettin one with a large wet/dry sump for a 325 gal tank. not to derail your thread or anything..just curious of the fx5's power...

yes but it only runs at 600 some gph with media and has less than half the media capacity of a 2260 for about the same gph

$120.00 for an FX5? That is super cheap! The shipping is jacked up a bit, but that is still very cheap.

Petsolutions carries the 2217 for $169.99, the 2260 for $299.99, and the FX5 for $339.99. I like Eheim canisters, I have a 2017 that ran for around 25 years before the impeller shaft finally broke. I still use it as an pre-filter on a wet-dry.

I like the idea of a sump+ fx5 .. but with your choices Id go with 2 fx5's ... you could set one up with all bio and the other as mech ..
... I never understood why people do this. Unless your bio media has some good polishing filters in front of it :irked:

One thing to consider that the currency between US$ and CAD is 1.2 ish.

Not that cheap, and then you got the shipping...

$440 for 2 FX5 is the best deal. ($160 each)

Kevin, eventually, if you would like, you can modify the fx5 filter and get 12-13L of bio media. That would be 24 -26 liters with 1200 GPH for $440. Can you beat that?

puff, just to add a jealusy factor, since i see alot of people buying and referenceing thatfishplace.com , i just figured id let you know, i live 30 min from that store and it is awesome
