I feel bad for you Bro, but why did it take a week to realize this joker was scamming you.
First indication would be who the hell puts all of their Credit cards and ID's in their luggage knowing damn good and well the workers at the AP have the right to go through your stuff. You keep credit cards in your wallet which you keep on you. If he is that dumb, then that should have been clue number one that he is not a good bussiness man.
Second Clue is you do not need your credit card to pick up a package from the AP. You need an Airway bill number and Picture ID. Maybe he put that in the baggage also, but doubt it as you have to present your ID for boarding purposes.
Then you help him buy plants from walmart and home depot and resell to LFS. While that is perfectly legal and well within your rights it is still a form of scamming. You helped him lead LFS to believe he was a legit Wholesaler knowing all along where you got those plants.
You also stated he was an old friend. You trusted him well enough to send $400 to, but not let him stay at your house.
Anyways good luck and I hope you find this guy and prosecute him.

I find it hard to believe, however, that enough privately-owned LFS's would buy nonaquatic plants in great enough quantities to generate significant $, and I doubt the big chains would buy from "a coupla guys."
The whole thing just sounds unlikely to me. You washed the soil off of the roots and crammed 'em in a box and sold them for...what...a coupla bucks....to make up hundreds (thousands) of dollars? And enough store owners were shady enough to be OK with buying terrestrial plants to resell to their customers?
