....the notion that it is somehow better to call someone enormous rather than fat is utterly ridiculous.

I heard about this and like you guys thought it was stupid and extreme.
Do the people censoring the books realise what has made them popular with kids for generatiions? As someone who likes reading i have tried to get my 7 year old into the habit and Roald Dahls books are a very easy thing to use when i want her to settle down in the evening and read before bed.
There are also the movie adaptations too which are usually pretty good.
This is the sort of nonsense that makes a fairly tolerant person like myself outraged and turn on the woke or politically correct. Its getting to the point where there is going to be a huge backlash against this sort of thing soon and the groups who are meant to be "protected"by this sort of censorship will find they have no sympathy whatsoever and it most likely wont even be their fault, it would have been caused by some idiot in a university or council office who thinks they are trying to help.
It reminds me of an incident here a few years back where a kindergarten tried to ban xmas as it apparently offended the muslim kids parents. After some investigation it turned out the muslims werent offended at all and hadnt made any complaint but some HR guidance teacher had tried to implement the ban herself to "avoid potential harm ". All it really did is cause huge harm to the group she was trying to protect even though it was nothing to do with them!
Not sure how things are down in vic, but where I live in Sydney, it’s basicaly christians and muslims. The way Christmas is “advertised” up here you can barely tell it’s got anything to do with Christianity.
Some teacher at my old school freaked out over “hark the herald angels sing” because there was a kid in a turban in my class.

In the UK we have the Oxford English dictionary. Every single word is in there, it is the go to reference book. It is updated regularly because, of course, new words come out. An example of late, and very apt for us Brits was the new word "Brexit".

I'm not sure at the moment if words are actually taken out as well, words which aren't considered acceptable any longer.

But we are fast approaching an era now where this could well be the case. "Fat" and "Ugly" would probably be near the top of the chop list, but there could literally be thousands of common words that would no longer meet print requirements.

I also see a time where junior school kids aren't even taught these words, and over decades and decades these words will be lost forever. Drastic, I know, but very much on the cards imo.

Just looked it up. Apparently words that enter the Oxford English Dictionary remain there forever! They are a permanent historical reference of our language, which makes complete sense really.

So, one book the snowflake do gooders won't be touching is the OED! A victory for common sense.

We get everyone here in Melbourne, it’s very multicultural Which I like but has become a lot more segregated the last10 years or so wherecertain races stick to the same area and don’t mix with anyone else. It was way more mixed when I was a kid and was great as everyone got along and we all celebrated each other’s events. I went to Greek Orthodox Easter and Chinese New Year celebrations with my mates families from whatever culture and we had Hindu Indians at our house for Xmas dinner once. It was very cool and accepting and as kids it was just normal for us to hang out at these sort of things. Thinking back it really was the true meaning of inclusive.
If it was more like that now instead of do gooders making things worse by trying to help and making everyone seem different the world would be in a better state by far.
I wnder how self conscious and singled out that kid with a turban must have felt over a Xmas song.

The politically correct police are going wayyyyy too far now. I found out today that future printed copies of the immensely popular children's books by Roald Dahl are to be rewritten! Classics such as "Charlie and the chocolate factory", "Fantastic Mr Fox", "Mathilda" and "The BFG" are among several that will receive the "makeover".

All the "outdated" and "inappropriate" language is to be removed and other words/phrases are to replace them.

The world is going mad. What next? The full works of Shakespeare or The bible!! Absurd.

Looks like the publishing company is feeling a bit of heat as a result of their boneheaded decision!

Yes, I've already seen that. They're still changing the print on a load of stuff, though they are also keeping the unspoilt originals too, thus giving the buyer a choice whether they want to buy the brilliant version or the sh*te one!

I imagine everyone will buy the originals and the revised editions will sit on the shelves and eventually get pulped and recycled.
The loss of $ will show the publishers that most people arent offended by some silly fun and tolleave things alone, especially things that have been selling very well for 50 years or so.

Yes...but doing it this way will have allowed the publishers to perform the virtue-signalling that seems to be mandatory these days, in an attempt to temporarily silence the squeaky wheels who are ready to take noisy offense to just about everything.

When Penguin is eventually forced by the market to return to the "Coke Classic" version, the cost of this entire ridiculous exercise will be...as always...passed on to the consumer. Meanwhile, the same vocal troublemakers will sit back and mull over the sad state of the world while looking for a fresh target for their wrath.

Personally, I think that many of the old-time authors used far too much punctuation, some of which is suspiciously sexual in shape; the comma, for example, is positively lurid in its snake-like form. Perhaps someone should look into this subtle yet disturbing way of perverting the minds of youth...? :nilly::swear::wall::headshake
