BGK are usually very passive. They just want to go about their business. Mine will push Cories out of his cave but has never hurt one.

They will hide until they feel safe, then you will see it more. For the first 2 weeks I wasn't sure it was still alive. He took up residence in a large castle with lots of hiding places. The only way I knew he was there was to catch glimpses of 'white' inside the castle. I put half a cube of frozen bloodworm in the castle everyday as he would not come out to eat. He soon learned that bloodworms were good and maybe it was safe to come out. Then he was everywhere - exploring - and sometimes it looks like he is just playing.

They are great fish but they need good water, good food, lots of places to get out of the light and out of the current, and some patience. My BGK greets me everytime I go to the tank - sometimes it is just to poke his head out for a minute and then back to sleep, but he always acknowledges me somehow.

He sleeps through water changes - just turns upside down in his log and sleeps. He will check out the python if it touches his tail, but it is just to check and then right back to sleep.

He was 3 inches when I got him a little over a year ago and he is now around 11 inches. He is by far my favorite. His name is "Shadow".

Good luck

i love the way you described your BGK... and very good info too..

Does any body have any personal experiences that involve BGK killing other fish or eating their eyes.

Mine is nearly 12" now and when he was about 9" he took the eyes from a green phantom and royal panaque. When in the bigger tank I thought a couple of sailfin plecs would be safe but he's took 1 out aswell. Still have 1 which he doesn't bother now. He's also killed 2 3" pearl gourami's so I took the other back to LFS so he didn't kill it.
I've tried introducing large adolphi cories and he went straight for them so whipped them out and into another tank.
If these fish had been in before he went in then it may have been ok but as it's his tank and others added afterward he's pressuming they're food.
Video link here, 11½" feeding. This will give you an idea of mouth size. http://www.monsterfishkeepers.com/forums/showthread.php?t=143328

Here he is now at nearly 12" :)

I have 1 question for you :)
Do you have the room etc to upgrade and house one in a large aquarium long term? If not then think twice as you will get very attached and it's very hard to have to give one away, I would be devastated. Even in the right aquarium it's possible it could reach up to approx 18"

I commend you for asking first and doing research BEFORE buying as it shows you care :headbang2This rule should apply to any fish ;)

Thank you Richy BGK i would have the space to upgrade the tank if needed I always do a lot of research before before I consider the fish for my tanks. Now I have 1 question for you what size tank do you yuor BGK in?

BR was in a 3ft then went to a 8ft and within 3 months my landlord decided to sell house so now he's in a 4ft as i couldn't fit the 8ft tank in and had to sell it :( I have outlets for him to go to. I've moved again since then and I'm not getting rid of him so ontrack for new tank plans for him :)

good luck they are gret fish

I have found having 2 bgk in a tank really helps. from the 1st day i brought them home they were so playful and after a week i could hand feed mine on bloodworms.
im still pretty new with them all myself but just lots of room too play, hiding spots, mine also love picking on my silver sharks its very funny at feeding time while im hand feedin my bgk the 3 silver sharks are twitching wanting a feed havent ben able to get my silver sharks to be hand fed yet but working on it :)

good luck anyways mate wish you the best make sure too keep your tank in a reasonable state and you will have very active loving bgk.

take care

Oh yeh fish in the tank while the bgk is growing up should be fine its just added fish later while he is much bigger he presumes as food lol
