Bichir and Flowerhorn

  • We are currently upgrading MFK. thanks! -neo
I wanted to make sure that I ask flowerhorn owners and bichir owners so that I make the right decision. I don't just want to run out and slap two fish in a tank and it turn out badly because I did not do any research first.

Not a good move.

Flowerhorns are just plain BRUTAL.

I have a near 12" one that I keep alone apart from adding my female Blood parrot to breed. I have scars on my forearms from this dude. Now I have to net him out of the tank for maintenance. No way am I putting my arms back in there...

No way in the world would I keep my precious Bichirs with a Flowerhorn.

Just to add to the thread, here is my brute "Tyson":

I never really found out a true ID of it. May be some kind of "Blue Dragon"?
I have had many fry from it and the BP female, and all those fry have that same blue sheen once they get to about an 1.5".

Crazy little f$*#ers!
He went ballistic on my arms...

^ LOL mine was a much more funny story.

The Fh belongs to my dad, I just help taking care of it. One day he decided to feed it feeder fish. When I came back (back then I didn't know about feeders, pellets was the universal food), I thought it was a fish my dad actually wanted, and the FH was chasing it. I dipped my hand in to seperate them and the FH snapped at my index finger.

HAHA, they do look gorgeous, and they do have AMAZING personalities, but unless you are ready to house them in a tank ALONE and ready for cleaning a lot of mess, really it isn't worth it!

They are "odd" in MY personal opinion (just looks mainly). He likes fish that are "HIS" and have a personality and would have anything to do with my babies lol. I get rid of fish at the drop of a hat if they bug my bichir lol

My Mother had a huge red one when I was about 13-16 he was a jerk and had his own 50gal. I think my boyfriend would really like one. There arent to many good looking ones at LFS around here.

I think I am just going to get him a goldfish tomorrow ;)

Look at my pic I currently have a flower horn with 4 bichirs right now. Now in the beginning the flower horn was king of the top and where ever she wanted to go on the bottom. Now 6-9 months later I think she is taking a beating now from the polys since they (2) I had before her are of size now to fight her. She is stressing out about not being about to do what she wants to do cause my polys dont play that mess anymore. She has till the end of the week and the pet store will take her back. The scales will tip for either or at certain times but in the end i believe the poly will win over if given enough time to survive. Also take note my flowerhorn is suspect to plucking one of my polys eyes out, was one I got and it was under weight and in bad shape so that could be why that happened
