don't bichirs and cichlids require different water conditions?
Yes the water they naturally come from is totally different from each other but seeing as it sounds like hes getting them from petsmart both species will be captive breed and will be more tolorent of water thats different from there natural habitat Also if there from petsmart all there tanks are connected threw a large sump so they are liveing in the same water all ready plus both species are not very sensative to differen't water conditions and can adapt eazily

So in short they will do with in your average tap water fed aquarium ;)

The combo its self has all ways worked for me so i'd say try it when the male JD gets large it may get pushy twords the Bichir so make sure it has a good hideing spot or add some dithers a few Female convicts would work great

at 1.5 inches wouldn't the jd out grow the bichir pretty quickly?

guy at petsmart said problem will be, the jd will grow much faster than the senegal bichir and it will attack it. but i'm not sure on the growth rates.

If you got the Bichir around 3''-4'' and the JD aroud 1''-2'' it will be fine

bichir is same length or maybe a tad bit smaller. i may put the bichir in a 46gal until he grows up more? or i can divide my 55g.

I'd usually try to get their water as close to their natural water conditions as possible. But as you said, they're captive bred so probably more tolerant.

just look for a bigger bichir, or get the bichir and wait for it to grow to get a smaller JD
, or get both and grow out the bichir in the seperated 55 or in the 46.
