Yes the water they naturally come from is totally different from each other but seeing as it sounds like hes getting them from petsmart both species will be captive breed and will be more tolorent of water thats different from there natural habitat Also if there from petsmart all there tanks are connected threw a large sump so they are liveing in the same water all ready plus both species are not very sensative to differen't water conditions and can adapt eazilyisa.alhadad;2477121; said:don't bichirs and cichlids require different water conditions?

So in short they will do with in your average tap water fed aquarium
The combo its self has all ways worked for me so i'd say try it when the male JD gets large it may get pushy twords the Bichir so make sure it has a good hideing spot or add some dithers a few Female convicts would work great
