Are these available or not? I have read that they are not imported and are usually something else misidentified. LFS has one listed and want to know if it's even possible and how would I tell?

They are sometimes imported, but with not with much regularity. I have never seen one so I don't know how to id it. What is the price? This should narrow it down quite a bit.

$60 for one about 5-6 inches.

No bichir bichir has ever been known to be imported to the US yet. They've only been imported to Japan and they've been bred there for a while but even the juveniles can cost thousands of dollars. Most likely your LFS is selling bichir lapradei.

Yeah we've had a number of discussions on this topic in this forum. The verdict thus far is that there isn't a single verifiable bichir bichir in the US.

That's what I remember reading and wanted to verify. Thanks.

I stand corrected. Does anyone know of a picture of a true bichir bichir?

No worries I thought I HAD a bichir bichir for a while...that was embaressing

Anyway - I think the best way to ID them for sure is the Dorsal Fin ray count. P. Bichir Bichir has more than P. Lap.

But if it's at a store and it has a less than quadruple digit price tag...you can be pretty damn sure it's not P. B. Bichir :grinno:

yeah price is one :grinno:

seriously though, the dorsal finlet count is one factor to look at, but i wouldn't rely on JUST that. it should be used together with other characteristics. Having said that, if theres at least 16+, then chances are good, and then you can use the other characteristics to simply back it up. But if it happens to have 15, then it's definitely less clear, as both Pbb and Pbl can have that number, even though it's not as typical for lapradei. In that case, you definitely need to look at the other characteristics.

But yeah it is true that Pbb typically has higher finlet count than Pbl.
