Alot of sites say that bichirs can walk on land to catch insects and that they can survive for a few hours without water.

How come no one has posted a video on youtube of their bichir walking on their carpet. I had to move my bichir once and i put him in a bucket but i think it was too slippery.

Well, I haven't seen any videos, but I have heard stories of people's bichirs walking away out of the room their tank was in, and into another room.

Q.that they can survive for a few hours without water.
A.As long as they stay moist they can usually survive out of water for a limited time.

A.Kinderspeil while they have a limited ability to traverse short distances across land its usuallyto move to a new water source,Not to hunt-Anne

They can struggle for a while but will eventually die by as they dry up. Maybe 30 mins is all they can last.

Tank cover must be secured.

1.the carpet can destroy the bichirs slimecoat
2.Fibers can work their way thru the scales leading to a nasty infection.
3.Once you get past P.senegalus they can get very expensive to risk the above on.

yeah its jsut wierd that youtube has so many videos of unusual stuff but not 1 person caught their bichir out of their tank walking on video.

When your fish jumps out you dont think "Oh I need to get a video of this" you run around like mad trying to pick it up...

They can last out of the water for a good long while. One of my fish used to have mental issues and enjoyed being smacked around by my NON declawed cats and being covered in carpet dust bunnies and fuzz. He escaped three times. One time he was out for HOURS - when I found him he looked like a big bloody cocoon from all the animal fur he picked up from the carpet and from getting scratched to hell by the cats. He's still fine, I gotta add. And yeah, I have found him in other rooms than the one the tank was in - but I think the cats had something to do with that.

*Scratches head* Just in case any of you think I'm saying something I'm not, I'm NOT advising people to let their cats play with their fish or advising people to let their fish spend the night flippin around on the living room floor. Just sayin they're resiliant little buggers :)

I don't know about bichirs, but I had a ropefish that was an escape artist years ago. I'd find him dried in a circle like a skinny donut only to recover completely when returned to the tank. Loved him then and still love 'em. It's only a matter of time before I snag a few of them....
