Bichir only tanks

  • We are currently upgrading MFK. thanks! -neo
Yes, thank you, i believe i will. I had been surfing around and seeing how the forums worked (im very "non social media" they say. I dont use fb or anything like that lol. MFK seemed to be the nicest and most directly informative site ive seen. The plan is to get direct and solid info first and build what i need accordingly. The info from you all here that i got tonite was more than ive gotten in 2 weeks. Thank you all for helping make this an already enjoyable start on this tank build.
I will most likely find the forum for bichir tank builds here and keep a nice update going (ill figure out the photo upload thing when needed lol)
Hhmm, no wonder my wife gets mad at me, she said i dont go FB but i go check this forum everyday, lolz

Also not sure where you are located but Wet Spot is in Oregon and so is Aquatic Day Care. Toyin is out of Texas and Neds is Massachusetts. Picking one closer to you could bring those shipping cost down, along with picking up at the airport as opposed to home delivery. Just more to think about, lol

One thing to consider too is that sometimes certain wild caught poly tend to be seasonal as to availability. Im not super clear when those are but you might start up a post asking. One downfall to wild caught is that they tend to be on the larger side and you miss that grow out time as young fish.
I Was just on the wet spot site, they got both the speckled and the gold dust in wc and at from what ive seen in pricings, is a damn good price. The senegals i pretty much figure to be TBs, but they too are 1/2 the cost of others. All 4 are about the 3" mark also, which would be perfect.

Im in Pittsburgh lol. I did notice they were in oregon. Texas?, well that isnt bad, done it a few times on the bike. As long as livestock is healthy on arrival, and its in the states, the shipping is gonna be what it is. I try not to get hot over those things, i think ahead and add to the order with odd things to cut the shipping where possible. Sometimes it works lol

Now that im getting much better info and i have a better understanding of tank, i will be looking into these others (many i never heard of, like the red endli... i wanna see that)
Im sure my picks may change, but now i got a much better view of things.

Red bichir is just another name for polypterus endlicheri. Endlicheri's are lower jaw species. They get big ranging about 15"+ and bigger.

I was just looking at a few, i do like the red endlicheri and the delhezi, the gold dust and im still trying to find out the name of the other i like, its a marbled one. Still got others on a big list i found. Its cool, its seperated into upper jaws and lower jaws. Im gonna go down the list and check them all out tommorow.
Do you know if theres an aggression difference between the wild caught and the tank raised? I would think yes as the wc would have a refined sence of survival, but im not sure.

I ended up selling off most of my upper jaws and I found agression wether wild caught or captive born was not really an issue. The upper jaws except for ornate seem to be a bit more on the mild side. With my lower jaw whole different story, they establish a pecking order like cichlids and there seems to be the alpha which in my tank is my endli. Some tail bites here and there and a little chase and bite but thats about it. Here is where the numbers help. It does spread agression and no single fish gets the brunt of it.
