Bichir only tanks

  • We are currently upgrading MFK. thanks! -neo
I ended up selling off most of my upper jaws and I found agression wether wild caught or captive born was not really an issue. The upper jaws except for ornate seem to be a bit more on the mild side. With my lower jaw whole different story, they establish a pecking order like cichlids and there seems to be the alpha which in my tank is my endli. Some tail bites here and there and a little chase and bite but thats about it. Here is where the numbers help. It does spread agression and no single fish gets the brunt of it.
Thank you, that was kinda what i thought.
Here is my thought and id appreciate your input on this:
As this is the first time with these type of fish, im thinking of 1st- staying with upper jaws as they are a bit milder and i am on the learning curve with them. 2nd- my origional plan was to have 3 together in a tank and as i can already see my 150 will go towards the lower jaws id like (as they get 2x the size) i can easily set up a 125 for them as a permanent home and learn the habits and lifestyle of the species b4 getting into the larger, more aggressive ones. (Dont buy a pitbull if youve never owed a puppy lol)
3rd- (heres the biggest confusion) should i keep them gender specific as well?

You dont need a gender specific, you wont know the poly's gender till they age up, some off them are kinda hard to tell. Mines are 12" endli and i still cant tell if its a male or female. From what i learned it takes 2 years to see their gender.

Thats what i thought. I didnt want to find that i had 2 that decided to breed and they attack the other.

As i had stated b4, i wanted to build a plywood tank (i like building stuff :) ) and was doing some measurements today (the window placements here mess up good wall spacing :( ) I can build a 5'x3'x2' (220g-225g) that would fit perfectly in my LR. In it id like to put 1- leucistic senegal, 1- beutikifori, 1- delhezi and 1- P. palmas. These are all the upper jaws i like (with exception to the ornate)
I think this tank would be more than good for these 4, but what if i added the ornate? (Thus keeping all the UJ's together) would this idea be ok or would the ornate be better with the LJ's?

You'll be fine, even when the ornate grows 2' long it still enough room for it to turn, but most ornate only grow 18", unless you have a wild cought one.

Yes, the ornate im looking at is a wild caught. All on that list but the senegal are wc's. I wasnt sure if because its so much bigger if it would bully the others

Ornate will definetly become a bully. They are the most aggressive upper jaw, they can be a killer of smaller polys too. I dont have a wild ornate, but my capture breed bits the bigger endlis. I have a ornate that ate one of my capture breed endli, we have one person here that have a sting ray and the ornate bit that ray and did a death roll. Im not trying to scare you or anything but just keep on eye with ornates.

Thanks. Its not a scare off thing, just a great "heads up" Im just trying to head off a potential problem i had concerns about. I think ill just wait and keep the ornate with the LJ's.

I remember seeing this post b4 when i was site surfing for info. If im correct, u saw it as i do... nature happens sometimes lol. It was the reason my question came up. (at the time, i didnt know much of them and only knew the ornate was much bigger. Didnt even know about the UJ/LJ differences in the species)
This is why im here, to learn more about them, and i have learned a great deal quickly here.
