bichir questions

I haven't but have thought about it. I hear they work pretty well together. I want to get a small school of three ctenopoma like your avatar.

Hello,

i've heard, that polypterids (and also Channa sp.) have problems with the proteins of mammal meat - in nature there are rare opportunities to hunt mammals for these fish ...

My question: Is ther any reason to feed mammal meat (unless if it is beef or heart or anything) if there are less "risky" food - with a more natural approach ... feeder fish, fish filet, worms and insects.
Years ago i had kept snapping turtles (in Germany it's forbidden to keep them anymore - like snakeheads in the US) and soft-shell turtles with a very big appetite - i've learned what food made more dirt or less (i speak about the water quality). After several water-change-parties (a risky play if you are guitarist AND keeper of snapping turtles) i've learned my lessons quite well - and i knew what is better NOT to feed:

liver and heart, rats and mice (dead ones) and fat fish like salmo salar ...

Greetings

Uwe

I thought it would be cool to have an african butterfly to occupy the top the ctenopomas for the mid level and bichir for the bottom , but since all these fish are carnivors I think the african butterfly will get all the food from the ctenopomas because it won't have time to sink.

I was feeding my RBP's beefheart that I bought from the butcher, It cost me .99 a pound for 4 pounds. At the LFS is its like $4 for 4 oz. To me it is worth the time to cut the fat off.

I would cut the heart in small peices and freeze it, and it lasted me over 6 months.

I keep my polypterus pair with a butterfly, and they do perfectly fine - although I'm going to move my polys when they are getting large enough to eat the butterfly.

Beefheart is very fattening, so it might be best to try and feed them chicken liver. It still has a fair amount of fat but does not have the amounts beefheart has.

I went to petsmart this evening to look for an african butterfly, they didn't have any :( I might go to the store tomorrow to look for some beefheart, but for now I just bough some freeze dried mysis shrimp, when I opened them i expected them to be crispy but they where still kinda squishy:irked:

okay I know this gunna sound weird but I kinda think african butterflys look freaky kinda like giant bugs lol I don't think i'm gunna get one

I know i'm just gunna open the cover and it's gunna jump out at me lol

don't get an african butterfly. I've had them before, and they are unbelievably lame. As for beefheart, you'd be better off feeding tilapia fillets, shrimp, and krill. Much healthier, and doesn't dirty your water as much.
