Bichir tank mates! Chill tank mates please!

  • We are currently upgrading MFK. thanks! -neo
How big is the tank? Maybe a different american cichlid? I had a couple red shoulder severums a few years back that were beautiful, and about as chill as a fish could get

its supposed to be a 100g ( 375 Liters ) but honestly i think its a bit larger , its hard to measure since it has a diamon shape ish , but its about 5 feet long and 3 feet ish at its widest and 2 feet tall, i honestly was really close to get severums before but the guy ended up simply ignoring me 2 hours before i was supposed to go over there ... i might try them thanks!

Ctenopoma are full freshwater, i have a group of 3 and they are awesome tankmates, rapidly becoming my favorite fish in there based on how they hunt. i have a group of raphael catfish as well which are a great addition, they grow large and have small mouths, really cool fish.

Oh really :o ? i really love the datnoid in this hobby but i feel like 99.9% of the ones i see on youtube become really stressed and rather boring almost always hiding and have a really dark color as they grow up . maybe these could be my new fake datnoids :P? i will look into them thanks! , do u recomend just 1 or try getting a group?

Ctenopoma are bush fish actually, and there a few varieties therein as well. My three are doing just fine, i dont see any aggression or anything between them.

I have datnoid and a sun catfish with mine but they are pigs with the pellets....but my bichir still get plenty of food. I just got a group of tetragonopterus argenteus I will see how they do....my guess is they will be ravenous feeders like SD's, but I am sure I can make it work. I just like the movement in my tanks. I still think pink tail chalceus will work well with top water they kind of sit there in a group waiting for you to drop pellets in...and you will not have any food conflicts when the food reaches the bottom. I know a particular online vendor that has some right now :) As stated Ctenopoma are FW I just used the common name being lazy. I like how they troll around when watching friend's tank vids. Rocket (Hujeta) gar which are a Charicin are another option....maybe even red or yellow tail Acestrorhynchus would be cool if you can find them.

I liked the apperance on a lot of those i've been wanting a gar forever but i dont want the risk of it breaking its back or jumping out like most of the silver arowanas / gars seems to do in this hobby unless u have a massive tank. what type of datnoid do you have and is it active and colorful easy to feed etc? big datnoid fan but they seem to be a bit tricky from what i've seen

How fast do they grow :)? and how big is the tank etc
IMO not super fast, however the three of mine were decently sized when i got them; the largest has grown maybe 1" in 5 months, and the other two about .5" in 2.5 months. everyone is in a 6' 125 gallon with a 20 gallon sump underneath

thats kinda slow imo :/ tiger oscars fked me up so bad haha anything slower then them a.k.a like frontosas feels impossible to grow up now :c

Well, just to give you an update and my personal experience...the tetragonopterus argenteus I just recieved had to go. They went after each other, a few of my polys, and a smaller Ntt with gusto. The victims were caught in time and unblemished so to speak...but man those particular characins are like stunning liltte Piranha. They were very nice looking, but it was a rather failed experiment. I am going with a group of 6 Chalceus macrolepidotus because I know what to expect and think they can co-exist pretty well. I would go with Ctenopoma acutirostre myself, but I don't know if they would stress my Dats. My Dats are wusses outside of feeding time. Hope you find your tank mates. Could always get some Oscars haha.
