I was wondering, what would be good mid and top dwelling african fish to house with my future monster bichirs? I have 2 endlis, 1 del and an ornate. I was just thinking of future possible tankmates. Thanks! Any suggestions?

yup depends on tank size. i was think odoe pike, african tiger fish, or african arowana but you'll need a tank 300+ gallons.

you say top dwelling? I think african butterfly.

However, pending on how big your bichirs are and will get, that may or may not be a good idea. I mean, I keep pearl gourami's with my endli and he leaves them alone, so that's a thing.

Im not looking for fish right now. Just planning. Im still growing out my fish in a 20 gal and would probably move them to my 75 gal when they reach abt 5-7". I'd keep them there until they get to a foot long then I probably would have gotten the bigger tank. These ploys are so damn addicting.

So what size tank do you want to plan for? a 75 or a larger one? And if a larger one what size or size range would you like. Or We can probably do suggestions for both lol.

Nothing came to mind thats african right now lol, but here are some other thats are pretty commonly associated with polypterus. I've heard leaf fish go pretty well. Once you start mentioning cichlids....... the possibilities are endless lol, but you could have oscars, GT, parrots, sevrums (they'll probably need and upgrade sooner or later), silver dollars, knife fish, depending on what size tank you upgrade to gars, datnoids, arowanas, peacock bass, etc..., IMO i wouldn't just look at african fish i'd probably look towards SA for some cool top and mid dwellers.

Well my 75 has my two polys and a gar. Im planning on getting a tank just around 100-125 gal. I was thinking of a black ghost knife cause theyre pretty cool looking but now that youve mentioned cichlids I think I want some kind of frontosa or something. Something that isnt really aggressive and wont ruin my bichirs fins. I want something that will keep people entertained even when my bichirs are hiding lol. Good suggestions but I think all of those fish would outgrow my tank lol

IMO some of the best cichlids with polys are blood parrots. They don't harm them and they aren't aggressive and they have personality. You could probably do an oscar as well, but yeah once you get into cichlids try an go SA because most Africans will get pretty aggressive if not overstocked and then of course you have problems getting food to the polys when the tank is overstocked with africans etc...,
