Is it 16-75" ?
lol no. i wish it were true though. thats 16.75" as in 16 and 3/4 inches.

anyway the size given is not quite true either. i know they can definitely get to at least 20" since one of mine is this big, and 20" is the largest i've seen on the web, although i've heard there're ~24" specimens, don't know if thats true or not. so for now i'd say probably 20"-24".

wow great pic's

thanks Infblue, i think because of your pic's i settled on P. ansorgii, but will it eat my SA cichlids? they are all about 3"-5"

it'll depend on how fast/big the cichlids grow, and how big/greedy the bichir is. if the bichir is in e.g. the 7"-10" range, then i'd say its very easy for it to eat them if it wants to. if the bichir is only around 5"-6", then its probably ok. no guarantee though. it may try even if it can't swallow.

fyi, the largest ansorgii i've seen in pics are 30", and i've heard there are 36" specimens, so this is one of the biggest species. although most bichirs in aquariums don't get nearly as big as the max recorded size, this species is still too big for a 55 gal (if the tank is for life).

now since mine aren't greedy eater, i can't give you a good estimate of how fast it'll grow and when it'll outgrow your 55.

just something to consider.

ps. you might have read that this species only gets to about 11", but thats outdated info.

any bichir that gets to about a foot would work in a 55g.
ive seen endlis listed as dragon bichirs.
yes polys have teeth.
i have looked into my endlis mouth when he was lying there and i saw those sharp teeth.

thanks, i guess that was outdated info. it was a site called "polypterus.info". but i might get a delhezi. but it said that they get about 12" on that website so i don't know what to believe. beblondie said they get about 14" so i think i will get a DELHEZI.

wow this thread helped me a lot... thanks to all that gave their information. i think i might get a delhezi or a buettikoferi. if they will fit in my 55?

A delhezi would do nicely in a 55. They only grow to about 14 inches so tank space should not be a problem. plus the patterns on some are really cool,
probably my favorite of all the bichirs.

yeah delhezi reaches about 14" or so. In aquariums, i'd say anywhere between 12"-14".

and regarding the size of ansorgii, the old info was outdated only since a little over a year ago when larger specimens were caught and imported. ansorgii was first available less than two years ago, and before that, its really unknown how big it can get. The 11" was only based on the few pickled museum specimens.

hmmm volume against length. what if i just got a 55 gal that was long and short? based on the assumption that bichirs only care about whats beneath them to travel on besides how high/low they can swim?
