it'll depend on how fast/big the cichlids grow, and how big/greedy the bichir is. if the bichir is in e.g. the 7"-10" range, then i'd say its very easy for it to eat them if it wants to. if the bichir is only around 5"-6", then its probably ok. no guarantee though. it may try even if it can't swallow.
fyi, the largest ansorgii i've seen in pics are 30", and i've heard there are 36" specimens, so this is one of the biggest species. although most bichirs in aquariums don't get nearly as big as the max recorded size, this species is still too big for a 55 gal (if the tank is for life).
now since mine aren't greedy eater, i can't give you a good estimate of how fast it'll grow and when it'll outgrow your 55.

ps. you might have read that this species only gets to about 11", but thats outdated info.
