Big bala sharks

  • We are currently upgrading MFK. thanks! -neo
If you are happy with them who cares about the price? Can't do anything about the price now anyways. Enjoy them they are cool fish and don't hide like your cats and other bottum dwellers will.

Small(2") at pet smart are 3.99, medium(4") are 6.99. I had a pair, they were very iffy, so i got 4 more. The 6 school around 24/7, and are very active. They really should have a 6' tank, as they like to dart, and at full size that'll be difficult in anything smaller than 6'. Very friendly.

Broke my laptop, just have my iPad and don't know how i can get pics up sorry guys

$70 seems pricey, but when they get that big, its whatever the LFS prices them at I have found. A rarer find in my LFS's.

I have been looking for a single bala to go into the 125 with my 6-7" single. I lost a couple a while back and this one is in my tank as a cleaner, it will sift the small grain substrate for pellet scraps and suck, will nibble on tilapia and shrimp, but doesn't eat his/her veggies at all...

I *just* saw a 12" bala at a LFS the other day, but I forget what they were asking-more fish than I need anyways.

A question for the day...If I am adding another to a single dweller, should I get slightly bigger or slightly smaller, from a dominance perspective.

I had a few of them up to 12inches before,I currently have a 10 inch.

I have seen some at a zoo before that came up shy of 2 feet but I believe these were wild and I doubt they would get this big in home tanks.

Did you happen to get a picture of the 2 footer? It kinda sounds like a fish story to me :grinno:

Edit: There's no wild bala's anymore. Just an FYI for ya

They don't exist in the wild anymore? That's so sad...

At least they are able to breed Bala's. There's no more ST Dats in the wild and no one has figured out how to breed them in captivity. I bet there's less than a thousand left in the world

Love the BALA! Graceful, fast and friendly. They always come over to say hi when my son or I go over to the tank.

A Lot of good advice in this thread, but I have a few more suggestions for a happy and healthy school

1). Fast water, A big Hydor Koralia; Ecotech Marine VorTech MP40; or pop on a Vortex Water Accelerators.
2). They need to school; But be carefull when adding to your tank. Balas have a bad habit of bullying the new guy if there is too much of a size differential.
3). Although this bit is partially anecdotal, adding some good quality mysis shrimp into their diet will help in growth and health.

My two cents at 2am ( from my iPhone no less)
