I am not intending to start a RTC or other monster catfish debate.

I am building a 225 gal tank. The more I learn about catfish the more I enjoy them. I have been doing a lot of reading and I have come across several breeds that Wikipedia and other sources (I am skeptical of Internet sources) say get about 18 to 24 inches long. Without having any experience in either tanks over 100 gallons and big fish. I would rather select big catfish based your experiences and knowledge. The catfish will be living with a silver arowana, a clown knifefish, a giraffe catfish and a few big cichlids. I also have two iridescent sharks that are scheduled to go into that tank but I have read that they need really big tanks because they love to swim. Their behavior in my 55 gallon confirms that, these guys don't stop (right now they are about 4 inches long).

Any suggestions on a fat lazy catfish that does not exceed 24 inches (that is the size that I feel is adequate for a tank that is 3' x 5' x 2' high).

Thanks in advance.

I heard bullheads only get about 18", but don't hold me to that..
Also, Channel catfish.. They exceed 24" but that will take a fairly long time.. PLus you can (probably) buy them at your LFS at like 2-4"

Bullheads are on my shortlist, specially the males. The images shown are really nice with their spotted skin.

I also really love the ripsaw catfish. Everything I read says they max out at 36 inches though they never get that big in captivity. I like the ripsaw because they look a lot like the giraffe that I have (I love my giraffe catfish, instantly became my favorite fish the second I brought it home).

Imagine bringing home a RTC... oh my god <3

some type of shovelnose?

Aren't they big also?

BTW, Tstone they have RTC's at my LFS for 30.00(usd)/piece. I have seen then online as low as 20.00 (usd) but 50.00 shipping blows that price out of the water and I read a forum member paid three for theirs. So I don't know if 30.00 is a good price or not. I would pay it in a heart beat. I don't get it now because I am concerned about the RTC when it get to be 3 ft plus (I don't want to make this thread about the morality of owning RTC's).

Tigrinus, Lima Shovelnose, Sun Catfish, Juruense, Orinocoense

Nice list of catfish. I have been doing some research and I really see the possibilities. After selecting size and color and be finalizing a decision based on my tank size and tank mates. The Merodontodus tigrinus Mega Flash Tigriun that I saw in Google images (from a pic posted in this forum) is an incredibly beautiful fish.

I will keep you posted.
