Big dogs: food, heath and exercise...

  • We are currently upgrading MFK. thanks! -neo
I am actually quite a bit curious on this subject. I have a sptiz mix can't say for sure her breed (rescue dog) but her documents list Akita, American Eskimo, European Lakia and Karelians bear dog. She came from the shelter with Science Diet (ewww) so we got rid of that and switched her to Taste of the Wild - grain free, salmon. She has been doing fine on this. I did a little research on feeding food like chicken, fish, beef, etc. (when I say little I mean very little). After reading about what I have all I remember is that there are certain things that certain breeds should not have. Though I find different websites list different things so I am unsure about how accurate this is (no I don't have these sites saved this was a while back). I am curious though is there certain foods my dog can't eat? (other then the obvious such as chocolate). Also when buying raw meats, do you guys just go to the grocery store buy a pack of chicken on the bone bring it home unwrap it and give it your dog? Is there more to this process? Also feeding meats I am already picky with my meats and have no issue paying more for natural meats, I would imagine this is better for a dog as well? Is roast beef any good as my mom got her hooked on it? I am a bigtime noob when it comes to this stuff. Anything else I should know or a good website for the general breeds my dog is? Sorry I know its a lot of questions but I ve been curious for awhile so it might be good to hear from people who actually have done this.

(sorry I did not go through the entire thread yet getting ready to walk out the door in a min. so if I missed something I asked - my bad).

Here is my dog, Akina:

No worries Ash when you've got time go back ad read some of West1's posts and the responses, i think he highlighted some of your questions as he is in or was in a similar position... West1 also provided some excellent links that will answer all if not most of your other questions, as to spitz specific questions i have no experience around them other than friends owning shiba, akita and tosa's....

Cool I am going to go back and read now thanks for letting me know about the posts =]

what line of akita's... but akita dont have dominance issues in that why at all, maybe one or the big male out of every litter of jap bloodline akitas might but they havnt been worked for generations and traits like that are well breed out with american akitas....

ddb certainly anit dominant or bold dogs either so maybe thats your best bet?

presa is the one that your first thoughts really apply too...

If its just asstectics then Canes and ddb would make excellent chices for family dogs. while presa's are solo dogs, i wouldn't have one in a house with children..... but i have only experience with presa's from my time working in Tenerife so true canaries presa's i never seen a america presa before... and have no experience with their temp...
