duck lips translates to columnaris, am I correct? Extremely tough to treat, and thrives at higher temps. Lowering the temp is correct for the disease but beyond that its extremely hard to treat. gram negative bacteria so meds designed for that are a good start. furan-2 and kanaplex used together has shown promise with the disease. a methylene blue dip bath and adding salt to the aquarium are also good ideas.

this bacteria thrives at high temps/high O2 in the water so lowering the temps, and reducing the amount of surface agitation during treatment are great ideas. Duck lips has a very high mortality rate due to, I believe, this being a more advanced stage of infection...but those are the best ideas I have at combating it.

Really sucks. When my flowerhorn had it, I force fed it with an air hose attached to a syringe...grounded up fish food to make a paste then injected it down its throat. I kept it alive for 2 months in a ten gallon tank doing this...with frequent water changes. Didn't use any meds, only salt to help with the slime coat cuz I handled him out of water to force feed him.

In the end, it got so weak and I couldn't stand watching it suffer, I helped it go to sleep. A member here gave me the idea to let it slowly go by putting it in a container of the tank water into the freezer. It fertilized a tree in my front yard. One of my favorite fish too.

What I did, didn't work for me but I tried. Good luck with yours.

If I feel like he's in pain and not going to make it I will ethanize the fish. I lowered the temp well just took out my heater so it's at 65-70 give or take it swings temps in my basement.

I know I'm devastated hes my favorite guy.

Also thanks everyone I hope some miracle happens and he fights through it.

At this point ill try medications After I will put him in a hospital tank and treat him for a day or two and if he gets worse I will ethanize him.

Here's one more pic at the same angle.

One more question it's a community tank and will my other fish experience the same disease? I am now considering not taking him out and treating the tank with salt and low temps for now the natural methods rather than medicating. I will give him a salt bath when I come back home.

He was one of the water splashers I have when I feed them. I'll keep you guys posted on his status

It could be a lot worse, you might get lucky depending on which treatment and various factors. I still stand by kanamycin, but would openly defer to more experienced members such as aquanero

you aren't going to beat a bacterial infection with salt alone. and if it is indeed ducklips then your entire tank is at risk, it is highly contagious. the new pics don't have him looking nearly as bad though IMO.

Oh god so someone please tell me should I quarantine him or just treat my 200 gallon tank. I literally thought he got hurt from maybe fighting with a female he likes but clearly it isn't.

I would quarantine him, that way you can keep a closer eye on him. Medicate him, and keep a close eye on the tank. If you see that anyone in the big tank is showing signs, treat the tank. But i would definetely medicate.

Thanks.! Also for the aminoglycoside can I use human antibiotic or is there wet fish specific. My wife told me he's the same he's swimming around just hanging out.
