Ive got a pair of captive bred motoros which I got 9 weeks ago. The female was 8'' and the male was 7''. Now, the female is 10'' and the male is 8.5''! They female eats like a machine!!! They are fed Yellowtail, prawn, whiting and pellets.

anyone seen them at 36"+?

Yes, I posted a pic of one which was nearly 48" from snout to tail and around 36 across. (pic inserted below but really doesnt do justice to her size, she was eating in the pic and her disc is pulled up a little, she is pregnant in the pic and last litter was 18 pups - kept at Maidenhead aquatics in IVER) She was in an 8X4 foot print tank.

My MARBLE female was captive bred by aquaman, I got her under 6" in April 2010 and she is over 12" in Jan 2011.

Fed twice per day, low nitrates, 300gal tank...only other tank mates are 14+" Pearl make and a 12" Fire eel.

Some tanks are stocked much more than this and the other inhabitants can hold them back too.

.

If that tank has a 8x4 footprint.... that that ray doesn't look 36" to me.

Looks closer to 26-28"

Each one of those strips below the ray, look to be equal in width... there are 8 of them... meaning each one is 6" wide.. she is the width of 4 of them, plus a bit of another...

My wild caught Motoro female was like 6-inches when I got her in Feb 2008. I just gave her away at 26-27 inch diameter (and heavy) a month ago......she was 20-inches in around a year......I think she was a genetic monster, as she grew that big in a 240 gallon (6' x 30"wide) with several cichlids and a smaller male hystrix.....I miss her, but she is now in a great home at H2O Custom Aquatics.....She will be in a huge pond, something almost none of us could give our rays.....

HEY I HAVE SEEN YOUR MOTORO FEMALE ABOUT TWO OR 3 WEEKS AGO AT H2O CUSTOM AQUATICS. MAN SHE IS HUGE AND VERY HEALTHY. YES SHE IS IN A GREAT SIZE POND THERE WITH OTHER RAYS AND IM SURE IS EATING VERY WELL AT MIKES. HE SPOILS THEM WITH BLACKWORMS.

SHE WAS AWSOME, MY FRIEND AND I NEVER SEEN A RAY SO BIG. WHEN WE SAW HER WE WERE IN AW! HAHA

That is why I made mention that she was feeding and pulling her disc up in a crunched sort of way that they do....mine do it all the time.

Trust me....she is big, her tail touched one side and her nose touched the other.....any which way you measure...she is a big girl. Next time I am there I will take a pic on a decent camera and hopefully a measuring tape.

would love to see a video of that big mama! any history on her ( age, captive born )?

I will take in an iPhone to video next time...they will not let you use a flash as the large arowanas get jumpy and they said one died recently jumping out after a flash went off. You can see a large aro in the pic.

I will also ask the age etc...although they did not seem to know that much.

They said that they would like to rest her from breeding but if they take out the male she stops feeding....I did not know that they would pair in such a sting bond?...

The false theory that fish grow smaller in captivity derives from the time before routine water changes became a norm in aquarium maintenance (perform a search on methamoglobin and methamoglobinemia in aquaria). Maintaining proper water parameters (and providing a varied diet) will yield fish that will grow (at least) as large as their wild counterparts.

I totally agree with you oddball but there are so many people who believe otherwise.
