Biggest Black Belt on MFK?

  • We are currently upgrading MFK. thanks! -neo
I've been saying it all along. We always dismiss the notion that "fish will grow to the size of their tank" as being myth. But I believe it has some truth to it. Not to say you can keep an RTC in a 10g, but I do believe growth is stunted when fish are kept in small tank. Peacock bass are a perfect example. Look at the sizes of bass that are kept in 200-700g tanks. They're aren't even close to what you see in the wild. Now look at the 3ft monster fish that JohnPTC has in his 10,000g tank. THAT is how big they should get.

Think about it. Why is it that fish never grow to their full potential when kept in captivity? Because we keep them in 1-200g tanks, that's why, and they 'grow to the size of their tank'.

And you also see this a lot with koi. Koi kept in massive ponds can reach 36" in no time. We have koi in a pond that's about 2000g, and have had some for over 8 years, and are barely over 24".

Wish I could post pics of mine but unfortunately I can't while at the office. Maybe someone could search through my threads and fine my black belt growth thread. Mine is a pretty good size, I would have to "guess" at least 14" or so.

i agree 100% but i think the matn problem is water quality. people arent performing as many water changes as the should for their monsters. mel o veras dovii is prime example 1 its not in a 3000 gallon tank but he keeps up with maintenence so well that he has prolly the largest captive dovii in the world. and his.umbee reached 23" before it passed. i think for those who cant get the enormous tanks for their fish need to change more water more often. just my take on things

I think water quality is key. I'm doing two 50-60% water changes a week on my 125. Setting up an automatic water change system in a bit here.

i try to change 100% of water in all my tanks weekly. as much as people preach filtration and bio filter there is nothing to get your water clean then the good old water change. keep those black belts coming

Not derail this thread but clockwork i'd like to know more about your automatic water change system if thats cool with u

Yeah that too, although I wonder if a fish could still reach it's max potential when kept in 0 nitrate water but in a somewhat smaller tank...
