Biggest Black Belt on MFK?

  • We are currently upgrading MFK. thanks! -neo
I remember doing a bit of digging a few years back on the whole tank size thing. And although i haven't the faintest of what the names of the articles were, i can definatly remember that they all concluded that water volume has nothing to do directly with growth. As an indirect factor of a "smaller" tank the nitrates would raise in ppm faster on the same scale as bigger tanks would raise in ppm slower relative to the water volume.
So in the end it really is nothing more than a matter of water chemistry.

Ever since i learned just how poisonous even small amounts of nitrates can be (10-20ppm) i've tried to keep my tanks on a strict 0 nitrate schedule, although it occasionally rises to 5ppm when i take a reading right before the scheduled water change. It ultimately depends on the amount of food you throw in the tank, and without measuring precisely how much food you serve at every single feeding you cannot maintain a constant 0ppm, reguardless of even a continuous waterchange system/drip system, as it would have to be set up to fit the strain on the chemistry in the first place.

Sorry for derailing, but it seemed like it had already been derailed anyway :D

Nice black belts all, they are still one of my favorite species of all american cichlids, and in my opinion greatly underrated these days.

i posted one of your vids. that guy is a tank

Thanks. What's amazing is that he is still growing, another example of the quality you get from Rapps I reckon. Anywho, ordered some new lights yesterday and changing the filtration on the tank in the near future. I'll try to get some new pics and videos soon.

i"m glad to see you finally warmed up to the blackbelts, i always told you he was one of my fav of all your fish

He grows on you slowly... Like a mold. ;)

I'm getting rid of his female and I'm just going to keep him for life. Him, my Cuban pair, and MAYBE one or two others... All my other cichlids are getting sold/rehomed.
