Welcome to MFK. EVERYONE on this site measures in TL, so its a given...

And...Fish markets measure differently than aquariums measure differently than LFS measure differently than grocery stores measure differently than Marine Biology classes measure differently than charter boats etc etc etc...and throw in all the different ways those same places do it in other countries and its a cluster#$%^...So theres not just one way to measure a fish.

No not EVERYONE does. I've never measured my fish in TL. There can be so many fluctuations in finnage depending on heredity, selective breeding etc. I compare the tail of the fish to hair of a person. If 2 men were standing next to one another, one being bald and the other having a large afro would the one with the afro be considered taller? Nope

Actually scato was correct. Thorichthys maculipinnis is the current, correct name for the species.

There is a lot of debate about this and you maybe right. Either way it is the same fish. This is a great article that explains the name.
