Biggest fish????

  • We are currently upgrading MFK. thanks! -neo
What's the point of this thread? All these fish named will grow as big the tank they are kept in will allow and often are stunted regardless of tank size. Someone show me a ten foot arapaima that was raised in captivity and ill retract my statement.

1. read the first post for the question, if you can understand English!
2. Wikipedia is not always right, show me a more reliable source of that fish reaching 12ft and prove that it can reach 12 ft in home aquarium. that 12 ft is just an unproven claim.
3. scientifically recored size of arapima is 3m(10ft). just like the 12ft on the piraiba, rumor (and most likely to be right) that arapima can grow to 15ft. and for the record, no fish in a home aquarium that ever grow larger than an Arapima in home aquarium!
1. I do understand English, and I did read the first post...
2. I believe this is a more reliable source. http://www.fishbase.org/summary/Brachyplatystoma-filamentosum.html
3. I don't get what you are saying. I think you are saying that it is a rumor that arapima grow to 15ft. If so, I never said that they did. Also, I believe the scientifically recorded max size is around 9ft. http://environment.nationalgeographic.com/environment/freshwater/arapaima/ http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Arapaima http://www.arkive.org/arapaima/arapaima-gigas/#speciesFactFile http://nationalzoo.si.edu/Animals/Amazonia/Facts/arapaimafacts.cfm

I saw three 6ft Arapaima in this LFS in Philly. It's not a zoo or public aquarium, but a row house converted to a store. There are also several 2 ft Pagu and sting rays in the same tank. The store owner said that one Arapaima jumped out of the tank by breaking the wall above and it took 3 men to carry the 150+ lb fish back to the tank. The store is feeding the Arapaima with chicken and pork and they look amazingly healthy. I don't know how the store can accomodate them when they reach 10+ ft as they are still growing. Those are the biggest fish I've seen in a near home, non-public aquarium environment.

No they are not the same But there is a Jew Fish or Goliath Grouper housed in an aquarium by my house and it is just massive. This thing could swallow a a 6 foot human whole. they are not good in aquariums at all they tend to just lay on the ground or back themselves into a corner. I got lucky enough to see it actually swim and its basicly an undersea tank! The size and length of the fish is unreal. I saw it open its mouth, that was amazing. I have a video and pictures of it I will post later. Also hungdang I found the 24 inch+ wild florida gar some guy caught it at a lake by my house back in the day and my dad still had the pic. Let me know if you need to see the proof.

the rumor was 20 ft, and there were many claims of 15ft fish, also I know there are quite a few that larger than 9ft in Thailand that they keep in ponds while there is no piraiba in home aquarium that even pass 5 ft!
if you read the first post and it said "largest fish that ever kept in home aquarium, no in zoo or public aquarium" then you should know he was talking about fish in home aquarium and there is no fish that ever grow larger than an arapima in home aquarium!

I read about the claims of 15ft arapimas. When they look at the skeletal remains it "was around that size", but since they didn't explicitly state the size I didn't count it. Do you have proof that no fish can grow larger than arapima. Well its impossible, because that would involve taking every other large fish and growing it out. Also pictures or videos of the arapimas in Thailand. I'd love to see them. I glad we could get the discussion without a lot of negativity. :)
