wow! that is a huge trop if it is in fact one. he looks to be over 3' to me.

could he have been wild caught at that size or do you think he was a captive bred/raised gar.

I hear they can get 4ft in the wild so most likely that guy was in a pond for awhile and put on some serious size. That is the biggest one i have ever seen

any chance if that is a p.bichir bichir? its japanese and in another thread someone posted that more p.bichir bichir keepers are located in japan

Unless you get one very young its impossible to tell while its still alive.On some fish species you can count the rings on their scales (kinda like tree rings)this doesn't apply to most tropical fish.For tropicals you'd have to count
something in the innner ear -Anne
