Biggest small mouth bass you've ever caught?

  • We are currently upgrading MFK. thanks! -neo
real nice man! I catch my smallies by the shore though.

Thank you!! I rarely go out on my boat. I have a spot I do a lot of shore fishing at and everytime I go I get like 20-30 smallies none under a pound. I usually take my boat when I go largemouth, walleye, or pike fishing

Well in this thread there are the fish lovers and the fish eaters. I respect both but seriously the main reason fish were put on the planet is to be eaten. So bringing in 6 large smallies is going to riun the entire ecosystem? I call BS. Remember, this river is my friend and I's SECRET fishing spot. When we go, I don't don't see anybody fishing there. The last time we were fishing there, people were laughing at us because they thought there were no fish there. :screwy:

People can think what they want. Personally I am more of a fish lover than a fish eater. But when i DO catch the fish, I eat it and not waste them. Besides, some of the fish we caught were badly injured because they were hooked at the gills. Why throw back a fish when it has 0% chance of survival.

Remember folks, this is a fish thread no a conservation thread. Please tell me 6 fish is not overfishing.

That is the EXACT opposite of what you should do. Release the larger breeding females, keep (if you must) the smaller males.

You know that bass can live many many many many years right? End of life cycle? Killing a 20 year old animal is never the answer, unless you really need it for food, then go for it.

of course for food! Why would just randomly kill a fish for fun? Dang. I don't even have the heart to kill a minnow. smallies only live to 15-18 or so years so that 21 incher is nearing it.

Man, me and my friend is the only people who fish there and this time was the FIRST TIME THIS SEASON FOR ME.

Keeping large bass on a regular basis in publically fished waters is an inconsiderate thing to do and generally the people who do it fall in to one of three categories, poor, ignorant, or douches. Draining a resource for your own benefit at the detriment of a fishery for others is just not cool.

That being said it is not illegal to keep big bass in most states, and if done properly it will not have a major impact on an ecosystem. I am not going to have a heart attack if I see an 8lb bass being kept out of a large lake. I don't have to like it, but it is what it is.

It's all situational but this is my point at the end of the day. The fish populations need fishermen like nick and redear as well as fishermen like Rebel. If everybody wanted to release every bass they ever caught, fisheries will end up stunted without enough of a food supply due to other anglers keeping panfish and other food sources for the bass. If everybody was like rebel, there'd be a shortage of bass in general as the big breeders would be gone. It's all a balancing act.
Good thing there is size slots on the bass and also the limits on the bass. That is what the regulations are for...to keep the fishery balanced and to prevents the overharvest on old breeders. Very few trophy sized fish are taken to home for either fish fry or mount on the wall due to the fishing regulations. Good assumptions about me, NCStateFisher.

not sure about you Americans but the regulation in Canada is the possession of 6 smallies per person.

Remember, My friend and I only caught 3 each.

DAMN. this thread is really derailed. mods wanna clean this up? lol

That said, an overharvest on average sized ones and too many protected trophy fish can be bad for a fishery in the lake.

i was making generalizations on both sides based off the nature of the back and forth you guys were having rebel. I used the most extreme from both arguments. here and in many states there are no slot limits, just a simple say 14" minimum / x amount daily so it is good to hear there are slots in place in your area. One lake in his area has slot limits in place both for tournaments and recreational anglers and it is the best bass lake in the state by far

and yes an overharvest of any size is going to be negative naturally

That would be a messed up ecosystem. We gotta carefully trim down the monster population so we can allow the babies to thrive also.

In my bass trip, we also caught four or six 8 to 10 inchers. We let them all go to let them grow.
