I've had a 5x2x2' 150g. I'd be reluctant to go any taller than 2' on anything other than a concrete slab floor without additional reinforcing (depends on the construction of the floor obviously). It is the height that is the main factor not the gallons, provided the weight is distributed evenly. I'd have no problems keeping a 500g tank on a second story floor if it was only 18" high....
I kept two 150 gallons and 1 180 in my apartment complex and that's after I had a 150 blow up and get all the floor boards wet. All tanks were glass too. It was kinda scary the amount of movement initially but u can get used to anything.
