Ok guys, so if bio balls and pot scrubbies were the same price which are u going to use for a wet dry and why. Which is less maintainence and what about lava rock for a wet dry?

if they were the same price i would use scrubbies cause their over all surface area is much higher, but scrubbies i think would tend to build up detritus faster thus losing it's effective bio filtration over time if not cleaned regularly. not to say that doesnt happen in bio balls too.

currently i use body scrubbers with a layer of pond matrix on top of it in my diy wet dry bio tower with an 8" air disc under the tower to further aerate the parts of the filter thats continuously submerged in water.

scrubbies are great. just make sure you have either a filter sock or a filter pad before them so they dont get full of poo
bc they will collect dirt and grime very fast. but your water will be sparkly :)

I use scrubbies and they certainly do accumulate detrius over time. Make sure you use a good pre-filter like filter socks and it cuts down on the solids that get to them. They are a bit more work but worth it in the long run IMO.

Bio balls will never clog. The surface area issue is a non factor seeing as a bio ball w/ no food or poo in it will always work better than a scrubby w/ food and poo in it any day. Anyone who has been running wet/dry filters for a while knows that no matter the amount of mechanical you have, crap still collects on the bottom of a wet dry unless you run scrubbies because it's not on the bottom, it's in your scrubbies. If your answer is a fine filter sock, how often do you clean it between water changes. A tedious fix to a bad / cheap alternative is not a fix in my opinion.
