bio classes unethical treatment of fish

Sheesh. When I was a kid, the thought would never have crossed my mind. Do nothing. It's a class project. The teacher probably doesn't need the headache of it at all, but went out of their way to try something cool for the class. When did we get to the point where this is unacceptable?
 
I wouldn't snitch on the professor or the school. But you should make your professor aware so they make sure that people doing the project follow laws and know how to care for animals.
 
Why wouldnt you want to report the teacher or school? I would.

I think you are already over reacting to this situation, so dont go and do anything drastic on top of it. The "pond in a jar" is a pretty standard HS experiment - and for your information Ive seen guppies last a year or two in a completely sealed glass pickle gar (probably 3-5g)

IMO, they should just kill the fishes when they're done & add them to their specimen collection; that's what we did with a ton of various small specimens in my Ichthyology class. Odds are that the professor and/or University is licensed by the state for collecting fishes of a certain size, so it's probably legal for them to have those fishes.

How is it their fault? Reporting the school or professor does nothing good. We are talking about a few fish here, they school/professor didn't murder someone. Plus how do we know for sure they were collected illegally? Does ColeFishing know that his professor doesn't have permits or that it being a school you don't need anything? Lots of schools do projects like these and raise salmon and trout and they are released back into the wild. And DNR knows about the whole thing and is fine with it. OP should check in with the professor before he makes a jackass out of himself.
 
I agree. Talk to the teacher. Tell him/her what your concerns are. Phrase them as questions: Hey, I was learning about taking care of fish online and was wonder if they are going to need a filter or bubbler... something along those lines. If they are a good teacher, they will listen and answer.
 
I don't want to take any legal action. I mainly just want to point that releasing the fish back into the wild is bad. The smallies were capture by castnet is the scioto river. They are each 4-5" long. They plan on releasing them back into the scioto river. Which run into the Ohio river. So it's a massive amount of water systems that can be affected. I want to try to talk him into giving the bass to me to put in my 1400G outdoor pond when they are done and possibly get him to allow me to lend him my fluval C3 to keep them alive.

It seems like you already knew what to do before you started this thread. You said they're your friends. You could just talk to them about your plan, and talk them out of their plan!
 
Also, you said they do an Eco project. Perhaps, Fluval C3, filter, or aearation will defeat the purpose of that project...
