At least I'm not the only guy out there buying/using pantyhose ;) for a filter!
It's only bad when you try to flirt with the cashier. It totally kills your game. :nilly:

the issue is water flow. the water flows from back to front and at the top of the filter, so all the media down below is getting no flow as the water is just flowing at the very top of the filter. with the factory pads a wall is created forcing the water through the media, here it is not.

Just a thought, is the tank with this filter for the oscars or is it to pretreat the fill water? I like the idea too. Is the tank in natural light or is it light bulbs?

I might take this concept, but instead of using copper wires, I'd just have some string, and I would use different media instead of denitrate, probably purigen or something. And then I'd also keep the biowheel running since it can only help. And the bamboo would only work in a well lit room otherwise one would need to bring in a light source (esp. if they have an enclosed hood like mine.

good point, an Aquaclear would be a more ideal HOB for this kind of project

I have a deal with my girlfriend, she drops me off at the LFS and she goes to the grocery store (they are side by side). She then calls me to get done and meet her so I can pay for groceries. The look on her face when I yelled across the parking lot to get me pantyhose was priceless. :D

As for the flow yes it is not as high as the original but this is a secondary filter for the tank. I am already operating an emperor 400 and a cascade 600. Something I did not show is I actually raised the level of the insert. So instead of being at the bottom it is actually midway in the filter chamber. I am going to double check but I think the flow from the impiler is more midway. Good lookin out though.

I was thinking of replacing the copper with zip ties. Isn't Seachem Purigan and Seachem De*nitrate the same thing? I know the Purigan are the pads you insert into the filters flow but they are small pellets where the De*nitrate are like rocks. More like pebbles but I wanted to say ROCKS. As for using a Purigan pouch for this insert that is a great idea. Can save on pantyhose. Biowheels are going in I have the wrong size cause I am a dumbie. As for the bamboo getting light it needs very little. If you do not have lights on the tank it is suggested ever month or so give the bamboo and couple hours of light and it will be just fine. Believe me you could forget about bamboo for months and it will be fine with out any help.

We all have spare HOBs laying around that's the sad part. Actually we all probably have tons of fish things laying around in general. :nilly:
