Just a thought, is the tank with this filter for the oscars or is it to pretreat the fill water? I like the idea too. Is the tank in natural light or is it light bulbs?

Lighting is natural in the eve and bulbs any other time.

the issue is water flow. the water flows from back to front and at the top of the filter, so all the media down below is getting no flow as the water is just flowing at the very top of the filter. with the factory pads a wall is created forcing the water through the media, here it is not.

dmopar74 you were rightand I have no problem tell you that. The water flow is from the back to front right below surface level. This really is not a good design idea but someone is making money off it. So I revisited my idea. Below is my new insert. Hope it works.

I took an old carbon cartridge and stripped the blue foam off and removed the carbon. Just a note if the cartridge is in good enough condition you can just remove the carbon and fill it up with whatever media you would like.

Fill the black plastic piece with desired media.

Then cut a filter pad to fit over the black plastic piece.

Then cut some egg crate to fit with the pad and media. Sandwich the filter pad between the black plastic piece and the egg crate.

Add some ceramic in the egg crate.

Then slip the nylons over your little media sandwich insert.

Tie it off.

Drop it in the filter chamber and it should fit in the grooves.

I placed a piece of egg crate in the back bottom of the chamber to keep the bamboo from sitting on the bottom of the filter at least till they get taller.

Now I will wait and see how I make out.

i like the new design. everything that has been said is true i was gone for a day or two and i got beat to the punch

No captian bottle. It is actually a cool skull vodka bottle a buddy and i finished off.
